being transported from distribution centers to the retail stores. A major multi-national

RETAILER was seeking a solution to provide near real time monitoring through sensor

tags at the box/pallet level and containers for transported perishable goods across their

Eastern Canada supply chain. (For competitive reasons, RETAIER chooses to remain

anonymous at this time). The requested solution includes monitoring temperature over

time to ensure quality and optimum shelf life of food goods. RETAILER wants to adopt

this type of solution to implement short interval control or early countermeasures to

ensure quality and supply chain reliability, reduce shrink and waste, and optimize sales

by creating a proof-of-concept for using artificial intelligence (AI) to predict remaining

shelf life for each product in the local retail store warehouses. For this test, the

RETAILER turned to Inteligistics’ agnostic sensor-based fresh produce solutions which

provide an end-to-end supply chain visibility and quality condition monitoring solution

for both continental and inter-continental supply chain customers.

Inteligistics undertook this project for the RETAILER over a 60-day period and monitored

57 trailer loads of food transported from a distribution center (DC) in Toronto to a dozen

different food stores in their supply chain located in Eastern Canada. They successfully

A multi-national RETAILER was seeking a solution to provide near real time monitoring of

temperature and quality of fresh produce at box/pallet and container level for transported

perishable goods across the United States. The purpose of the RETAILER’s Cold Chain

Compliance Project was to provide full visibility of the product status from the grower/supplier

to RETAILER Distribution Centers. The remaining pallet level shelf-life of the fresh produce at

every major node including Grower’s shipping point and upon arrival at the RETAILER DC is also

a deliverable. The visibility was to be accomplished via a comprehensive data platform

(“Ecosystem”) that would serve as the data repository and messaging system of information

required by RETAILER from origin (Grower’s field) to destination (RETAILER’s Distribution

Center). Inteligistics undertook this major project and successfully completed the project to

The project was focused on condition monitoring of fresh strawberries in the entire supply

chain between the field of harvest in Central California and several RETAILER’s distribution

centers (DC) located in various parts of the US. Inteligistics provided appropriate cold chain

management to protect the quality and freshness of the product through transport from field

to processing facility, precooling, cold storage, shipping and transporting to RETAILER DCs

across the nation.

The requested solution includes monitoring time and temperature to ensure quality and

optimum shelf life of fresh produce. RETAILER wanted to implement short interval control or

early countermeasures to ensure quality and supply chain reliability. For this test, the RETAILER

turned to Inteligistics’ agnostic sensor-based fresh produce solutions which provide an end-to-

end supply chain visibility, quality condition monitoring, and remaining shelf-life predictability

solution for both continental and inter-continental supply chain customers.

An estimated 30-40% of fresh produce is lost post-harvest, most expiring before it can be sold

New traceability requirements affect the entire fresh foods supply chain.

Salinas, CA (May 22, 2023) On November 7, 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent a shot across the bow of the fresh foods supply chain when it published the final version of the Food Traceability Rule, also known as FSMA 204. While the rule filled critical traceability gaps in the supply chain by adding requirements for both the first mile (grower to shipper) and last mile (warehouse to store/restaurant), the scramble to fulfill these new requirements and getting knowledgeable guidance has left the industry searching for answers and efficient solutions. Inteligistics is now offering tailored consulting services to help companies identify processes and methods to address this industry dilemma.

The intent of FSMA 204, which becomes effective on January 20, 2026, is to allow regulators to identify the source and extent of foodborne illness outbreaks faster to alert the public and avoid wide-spread public health issues. FSMA 204 requires tracing each carton back to the farm, ranch or lot and reporting the information to FDA regulators within 24 hours. Most companies could gather and report the information today at the pallet level, but once a pallet is broken down and distributed, the detailed information is lost.

Technology use in the produce industry increases every year, but it hasn’t yet made a digital transformation like some industries.

Rao Mandava, chairman and president of Inteligistics, hopes to help lead this transformation. The company sells supply chain technology, and its clients include Driscoll’s, Del Monte, Dole, Church Brothers, Fresh Express, Taylor Farms and Walmart.

“I want to bring technology from the industries I’ve worked in, to the produce industry,” he said.

Those two industries are nuclear energy and airlines, and he thinks produce can learn from these examples.

Before he started Inteligistics, Mandava used his mechanical engineering background first at Boeing and then at Westinghouse, where he managed a group that transformed the nuclear control room from analog to digital.

He said after it was done, the cost to operate a nuclear power plant dropped by two-thirds.

“It used little internet and no cloud, so we created our own network and artificial intelligence,” Mandava says. “We went from using over 10,000 cables to using about 100.

He didn’t start a technology company specializing in fresh produce by chance. He was born into a farming family in India and has always had a passion for agriculture.

Inteligistics’ main products are InteliTemp, InteliCool, InteliMonitor and InteliDock, which all improve efficiency of existing systems using technology and analytics.

It’s dashboard product, InteliView, Mandava says, is one that could help lead the digital transformation.

“We can see what’s happening throughout the supply chain and correct problems when they arise,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges, he says, is that growers and retailers have to work together and use technology that works with each other, and that would mean each side would have to be more transparent.

One example, he says, is with product shelf-life. Growers can monitor product temperature throughout the supply chain and share that data, which can give retailers an ability to reduce shrink and costs and give consumers better products.

Inteligistics customers have to evaluate return on investment, of course, but Mandava says now it’s taking months rather than years. InteliView works with existing systems and products, he says.

“We work with other technology companies,” he says. “We know we can’t do it all ourselves or overnight.

He says the system also has food safety and sustainability data and eliminates information silos.

“It doesn’t have to be a big investment,” Mandava says. “Complete digitization can take less than a year.”

Monitoring and responding to deviations in the cold chain as perishable products go from the field or source to consumers has been demonstrated to be the single greatest factor in ensuring product quality and predicting shelf life, says Inteligistics. The company has announced a new upgrade to its platform that incorporates real-time data from cellular temperature trackers made by Emerson, Delta Trak, Cydeance and others.

“We are now able to take the raw data from these wireless sensors that are used throughout cold chain operations and bring this data into our InteliView platform and dashboard,” Rao Mandava, Inteligistics chairman and president, said in a news release. “Combined with digital data collected throughout production and cold storage to the point of shipping, and presented on our cloud-based Inteliview platform, managers can run detailed reports to measure KPIs and highlight and remedy anomalies.

“From pharmaceuticals to produce, the shelf life and ROI implications are significant,” Mandava continued. “For example, a recent test of over 2,000 loads of avocados was able to accurately predict shelf life based on time and temperature during transit.”

Inteligistics has been bringing end-to-end solutions to monitor and improve efficiency for logistics, supply chain and cold chain management for companies producing and selling perishable products for over a decade, according to the release.

Soon after starting, she implemented a technology system from Inteligistics, whom she’d worked with for years at other companies, to improve vegetable product cooling efficiency.

She quickly began to see the benefits.

“With the implementation of InteliCool, we improved cooling efficiencies by 15-30 percent and transferred the vacuum cooling process from a static data and operator experience to a dynamic data-driven decision-making process,” she said.

Inteligistics’ InteliCool is designed to create a smarter cooling process for both tunnel and vacuum tube cooling. It is a software system with probes and hubs that works with off-the-shelf hardware components, within a company’s existing cooling system. It digitizes the data and ties into the system and can adjust automatically during the cooling process.

Klose the system adds value in several ways.

Because it allows operators to see temperatures in real-time on a smartphone or tablet, it allows each load to be custom cooled, which saves energy, as cooler product doesn’t have to be cooled as much as warmer product.

She said many operators have become wary of freezing a load, so their tendency was to not cool a load enough.

“So, it improves quality and shelf-life but also saves energy by cooling each load to its needs,” Klose said.

Rao Mandava, chairman and president of Inteligistics, said that during his work with Klose and Church Brothers, the company found that there were times that loads would be backed up, especially in middle of the day, and it would delay the product getting cooled properly.

“When they went to our system, the reduction of cycle time flattened their amount of backups and waiting,” Mandava said.

He said he was gratified to see quantifiable savings for Church Brothers using Inteligistics technology, and he has proposed using more of its technology to cover from receiving point to shipping point.

“This would digitize the supply chain for them,” Mandava said.

Klose said she has been a long-time proponent of using more technology and digital processes, but it hasn’t always been possible.

“Technology is highly important, but it never made it in the field because of the work involved,” she said.

Mandava said that’s changing now, and he wants Inteligistics to be one of the companies to transform the produce industry into a digital industry.

Showing up to 30 percent energy savings for a company like Church Brothers is a big step in convincing companies that an investment in technology will show a return on investment, he said.

Why California Giant turns to technology for more efficient cooling

The berry company partnered with Inteligistics using its Intelicool system.

Joe Barsi, president of California Giant, said the company was pleased with the results.

“Inteligistics has helped us be more efficient,” he said.

He said it solved labor issues, reduced cooling time, showed ease of implementation and usage, provided paperless documentation of the precooling process, and it provide real-time actionable data and visibility for efficiency improvement.

Barsi said the ease of use and efficiency could be seen in the fact that forklift drivers no longer have to get off their machines to measure cooler temperatures, and they can monitor it all using their smartphone or tablet.

“The interface is pretty easy, and it saves time and effort,” he said.

Inteligistics’ Intelicool is designed to create a smarter cooling process for both tunnel and vacuum tube cooling. It is a software system with probes and hubs that works with off-the-shelf hardware components, within a company’s existing cooling system. It digitizes the data and ties into the system and can make adjustments automatically during the cooling process.

“We learn their practices and try to improve them,” said Eric Kithinji, chief engineer. “It used to be based on estimates of time and temperatures, and now operators are much more efficient using real-time information and documentation. This allows for comparisons between coolers and across season and facilities.”

Lawrence Mallia, project manager, said the system was designed to be easy to use.

“Labor is a bottleneck, and this technology simplifies operations,” he said. “You don’t need an expert or to have deep training. It manages risk and expands the pool of candidates who can do the job.”

Rao Mandava, chairman and president of Inteligistics, said California Giant showed interest in improving operations with Inteligistics, so the company proposed California Giant use Intelicool for its whole system for the summer season.

Barsi said California Giant wasn’t ready to commit to that, so it ran a pilot this summer.

Mandava said that created some difficulty for workers to be using the existing system and Intelicool at the same time, especially during the busiest time of the season.

“They did the pilot during the busiest season, but that’s when it would help the most,” Mandava said. “That’s the advantage of the system – when you’re most busy, it helps you the most.”

Barsi said California Giant saw enough of the system to want to expand it for the fall season to all its tunnels.

Mandava said he looks forward to working further with California Giant and helping more produce companies become more digitally proficient.

“We aspire to be a leader in the digital transformation of the produce industry,” he said.

Applying sensor technology to the food supply chain to increase traceability could reduce food waste by between 5% and 7%, according to a new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF)

Applying sensor technology to the food supply chain to increase traceability could reduce food waste by between 5% and 7%, according to a new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF).
WEF said 35% of fruits and vegetables are lost or wasted in post-harvest, processing or distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa. That number goes down to 15% in Europe, highlighting differences around the world.
Enhanced food supply chain traceability will make it easier to identify where losses are occurring, so the issues can more quickly be addressed. "Once the primary causes of food loss and waste have been identified ... the appropriate stakeholder can better address the problem," the report said.

The inefficient supply chain is one of the main reasons for food waste. Almost one-third of global food production ends up wasted, according to WEF.

These loses then lead to added procurement and distribution costs, resulting in both business and final consumer spending more on the products, the report said.

Food loss can be the result of a number of circumstances, from lack of best practice on the farmer's part to not enough space on the cold chain, but knowing where exactly the problems arise is not typically known, WEF said.

Greater implementation of IoT technologies could be the helping hand the food supply needs — providing a digital trail of the food's journey.

WHERE ELSE MIGHT BLOCKCHAIN MAKE SENSE?

Blockchain technology offers a way for untrusted parties to reach agreement (consensus) on a common digital history. A common digital history is important because digital assets and transactions are in theory easily faked and/or duplicated. Blockchain technology solves this problem without using a trusted intermediary.

WHERE ELSE MIGHT BLOCKCHAIN MAKE SENSE?
The short answer: in unique instances.

Specifically, a blockchain is needed for Bitcoin because:

Bitcoin is a public ledger of bitcoin transactions
There are untrusted nodes recording transactions on the Bitcoin ledger
Bitcoin does not want to trust a third party to administer the ledger
Effectively, Bitcoin uses a blockchain to decentralize payments. Where else could we use this unique database architecture to get rid of the middleman? Are there other things that could be decentralized?

Let’s take this step-by-step. What’s another scenario where everyone needs a record of ownership, and where a trusted third party isn’t preferred?

A couple of immediate use cases come to mind.

Land title is one. It could be quite useful for everyone to have access to a decentralized source of record saying who owns a given parcel of land. Considering that coups and wars often redistribute land unfairly and/or incorrectly, this could not only prove useful, but also have humanitarian implications. Once a land distribution is agreed upon, it can be recorded in a distributed ledger and no longer be subject to ongoing debate. A number of companies are working on this, including velox.RE.

In the same vein, a blockchain could be used to establish ownership over any number of physical assets – cars, art, musical instruments, and so on. Let’s think about why this makes sense.

A paper record of title is prone to forgery and/or physical degradation. Centralized databases are prone to hacking, human error, and/or tampering. A blockchain means there is no single entity controlling the ledger. Therefore, recording physical assets on a blockchain is a prime example of where the technology might come in handy to track ownership with a tamper-proof, neutral, and resilient system…

A service that provides real-time monitoring of remaining shelf life for fresh produce

NEW ORLEANS — Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Inteligistics is commercializing a new service that provides real-time monitoring of remaining shelf life for fresh produce.

Called Pulse, the system is built on a cellular-connected unit that can provide multiple internal product temperature probes, GPS tracking, multiple sensing options (shock, light, ethylene and more), real-time access to data and centralized cloud storage, said Rao Mandava, president of Inteligistics.

“Consumers are demanding better quality and that’s driving the industry,” he said. “It’s only a matter of time before you have to establish what the product has been through in terms of conditions.”

Mandava said the use of shelf life data can improve the bottom line and increase customer satisfaction.

The company has commercialized the Pulse platform this year has hundreds of units deployed, with talks to put in place many thousands more, he said. The company is talking with grower-shippers, transportation companies and retailers about the Pulse service, he said.

Cost of the Pulse service is about $70 per month per unit leased, and that cost includes software and access to all data, he said. Discounts are available with volume,

The company recently completed a pilot with a retailer — Mandava did not identify the retailer — that tracked produce all the way from the harvest point to the store, with the retailer using Pulse data on shelf life and then validating the results based on samples…

Inteligistics Advances Food Safety with Innovative Temperature Measuring Technology

Rao Mandava was born into a farming family in India and grew up learning how to harvest rice, tobacco and various vegetables from his father. After years of exploring different careers and countries, Mandava came back to his original farming roots through Inteligistics.

Inteligistics was launched by Mandava more than 10 years ago to provide the fresh produce industry with a solution to ensure quality and freshness using temperature monitoring, humidity visibility and product tracking. “Our technology assures that perishable produce is safe, fresh, edible and saleable for longer periods of time,” said Mandava.

When going to the grocery store, it can be unclear how long a head of lettuce or a package of grapes may stay fresh. Produce can last between a few days or as long as two weeks, Mandava remarked. “Quality is uncertain so customer satisfaction is inconsistent. Our monitors deliver quality certainty which is important to the consumer and the success of the growers, shippers and retail stores.”

Inteligistics’ solutions provide pulp temperature monitoring for fresh produce. A sensor actually touches the product being monitored, starting from the field through to the cooling and shipping process, and even to the retail store shelves. “No other competitor has end-to-end technology visibility,” said Mandava. “Other companies either measure temperature as the produce is transported or in specific locations in the field. Our technology starts from the field and monitors the same box or pallet of produce all the way to when the consumer buys it. We automate this process and provide full traceability throughout the distribution chain.”

There are several lessons.

I encourage you to add pulp temperatures and a check box for the driver to sign off on those temperatures.
Consider a pre-load check list that also includes pulp temperatures for the driver to initial. By taking these measures, it further documents your best practices and indicates to your buyer and carriers alike that you, as a shipper, focus on details to make sure product is always placed in the trailer with optimum intention to have it arrive at contract destination in good order.

Inteligistics eyeballs temperature across supply chain

SALINAS, Calif. — As Inteligistics Inc. founder Rao Mandava sees it, fresh produce temperature monitoring is inextricably linked to issues of food safety, traceability and regulatory compliance.

Mandava, who is working with Driscoll’s, Fresh Express, Dole and retailer Giant Eagle among others, brought his supply chainwide point of view to Forbes Media’s AgTech Summit in Salinas, Calif., in July.

Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Inteligistics offers the InteliView suite of technologies for harvesting, forced-air and vacuum pre-cooling, shipment, distribution centers and stores.

InteliView employs machine to machine communications, wireless sensors, radio frequency identification and other capabilities.

“It senses the temperature automatically and identifies the current temperature in a color coded way,” Mandava said of one module. “When it’s green, they just move and it’s done. Previously they used to poke and find, and that’s losing time. It’s all mobile technology too.”

“Temperature is mission critical to produce safety and quality, and right now it’s being done manually, which is inefficient,” he said. “With paper recording the industry misses out a lot. Our systems help them make it automatic.”

“No company that I know of is doing it from harvest to the retail store, and from the picking point to the cooling point there are not that many,” he said.

A key distinction drawn by Inteligistics is between pulp and ambient temperature.

“We always do the pulp temperature, not the ambient like a lot of other people do in transportation,” Mandava said. “With the Food Safety Modernization Act coming on, we’re gearing up for how, from beginning to end, safety is being monitored by a system. Regulatory compliance and real-time, correct information are a big part of that. No assumptions.”
